WIFI "eduroam"

Eduroam (120) The University of Siegen participates in the eduroam service provided by the DFN-Verein. eduroam.

For the participating institutions, this service allows:

  • WIFI access for guests from foreign universities and scientific institutions. Facilities at the University of Siegen
  • WIFI access for scientists/students of the University of Siegen at other universities and scientific institutes. Facilities
  • WIFI access at the University of Siegen for employees/students from Siegen

Authentication is established via the DFN network with the home university, while network access is provided by the host university.

Safely logging in to eduroam - here's how:

Manual configuration is possible but not supported on all devices. The installation with the geteduroam app is strongly recommended, because when registering in the eduroam WIFI the server certificate is checked and thus security is increased.

Down below you will find several configurationguides on how to establish the connection to the eduroam WIFI.

Important to know is that whenever you are asked to type in your username and password you must add "@uni-siegen.de" right after your username. (for example g123456@uni-siegen.de)

Configuration for your android- or iOS smartphone / tablet

  • Android 7 and older
  • For Android operating systems, there is an app for installing the necessary configuration profile. The eduroam CAT-App is available in the Google-Play-Store.
  • Start the app after it has successfully downloaded.
  • The app needs access to your location. Allow location access.
  • Next, the profile for the use of eduroam must be set up.
  • If the location query has worked the University of Siegen is automatically displayed for selection.
  • If not, tap the button labeled "Manual Search".
  • Search for "University of Siegen"
  • The University of Siegen is now displayed as a nearby location.
  • Tap on the University of Siegen.
  • A configuration file will be created for you.
  • Confirm it with the button "Install" in the lower right margin.
  • Next you get to the item "Installation".
  • There you will be prompted to enter the university username and password.
  • Very important: behind the username you must add "@uni-siegen.de" (for example g123456@uni-siegen.de).
  • Next, tap the button labeled "Install".
  • If the profil is installed successfully it looks like this:
  • The WIFI eduroam is now successfully installed and set up.
  • If the installation requires that the old eduroam profile must be deleted follow these steps:
    • Open the app "Settings" on the smartphone / tablet and first select the menu item "wireless & networks" and then "WIFI".
    • The WIFI eduroam should be displayed here. Now tap on the option "remove network".
  • Android 8 and newer
  • For the Android 8 and newer operating system, there is an app for installing the necessary configuration profile. The geteduroam-app is available in the Google Play store.

  • iOS

  • For iOS there is an app for installing the necessary configuration profile. The geteduroam-app is available in the Apple App-Store.

  • If the installation requires that the old eduroam profile must be deleted, follow these steps:
    • Open the app "Settings" on the iPhone / iPad and select the menu item "General".
    • There you will find the item "Profiles". If you click on it, all installed profiles will be displayed. Now select the old eduroam profile and tap on "remove".

Configuration for your laptop / PC

  • macOS
  • Navigate with a browser (such as Safari) to the page: https://cat.eduroam.org, select "Download your eduroam installer here" and then go to Home Organization 'University Siegen'. Download the tool by clicking on the blue button (where the operating system is displayed).
  • The configuration either starts automatically or you find a file "eduroam-OS_X-Universitaet_Siegen-eduroam.mobileconfig" in the download folder and you have to open it with a double-click.
  • The tool will guide you through the installation. During the installation, you will be asked to enter the university user name and password.
  • Very important: behind the user name you must put "@uni-siegen.de" (so for example g123456@uni-siegen.de).

Notes for the configuration without the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool

  • Please note, if you set up access to the "eduroam" manually, that you have the root certificate of Deutsche Telekom (https://pki.pca.dfn.de/dfn-ca-global-g2/pub/cacert/rootcert.crt) and enter the radius server "radius.uni-siegen.de". Likewise, the external identity must not be equal to the inner identity - therefore please enter for the external identity anonymous2018@uni-siegen.de.

Problems with the installation?

Ideally, the installation will run smoothly, but if problems arise, it may help to e.g. manually delete the old configuration profile.
  • On iOS it works like this:
    • Open the app "Settings" on the iPhone / iPad and select the menu item "General".
    • There you will find the item "Profiles". If you click on it, all installed profiles will be displayed. Now select the old eduroam profile and tap on "remove".
  • Under Android the profile can be deleted like this:
    • Open the app "Settings" on the smartphone / tablet and select first the menu item "Wireless & networks" and then "WIFI".
    • The WIFI eduroam should be displayed here. Now tap on the option "Remove network".

Certificate

Depending on the device, you may need to import the root certificate.
